thank you parents!

March 30th, 2011 · No Comments · General Information, The Team

a big “thank you” to the parents that came to the parent teacher conference today! it’s really wonderful to see the parents that recognize the importance of being involved in their child’s education.

we realize that there might be parents who wanted to attend but were unable to. there are several ways to stay in contact with your child’s teachers:

email: umslions@gmail.com
ums phone: 735-3110 (leave a message for a particular teacher and we’ll return your call asap)
this website: www.ums8a.edublogs.org (leave a comment)
good ol’ fashioned notes: send a note to school with your child and we’ll send one back.

please continue to be involved…it makes a difference!

haiku nature walk

March 24th, 2011 · No Comments · activities, The Team

the reading class is in the HAIKU section of our poetry unit and since the japanese form of poetry was originally written about nature, i took class out side.

wednesday, february 23rd, the 8A lions  went on a nature walk around campus. the purpose was to experience and appreciate the nature that surrounds them everyday that they’re usually too busy to notice. we looked at, smelled and touched tree bark, leaves, grass, flowers, the clouds in the sky. we listened to the wind blowing through the trees, crickets, bees buzzing and birds chirping.

they kept notes on their observations in their haiku journals which were used to compose original haiku. here are some pictures taken on our trip.

you can refer to your notes and portfolio if you’re unsure about anything or need examples. don’t forget i’m looking for shakespearean sonnets so you have to follow the proper rhyme scheme and iambic pentameter.

no pressure but…this one’s for the book so make it look good. it’s going to be seen for years to come. :)
